Italian Literature II: Luigi Pirandello

Luigi Pirandello is one of the most eminent figures of Italian literature in the 20th century. Writing novels, tales and theatre he developed a view of man and history, which represents at most that historical period, its “consciousness” and civilization. Studying some central concepts of his arts, like “mask” and “humour”, we shall have the key to understand that historical moment and its anthropological and intellectual issues.

The course meets twice a week. During the first lesson of the week the teacher introduces a different play or novel chosen from the most important works of the author. The second lesson is devoted to an open class discussion guided by the teacher.
