The Social Science department at the Siena School focuses on immersing the students in the local community and culture. The department offers a Sociology course that provides students with analytical and research tools that allow them to conduct active fieldwork in Siena in places like a local home for senior citizens and a psychiatric rehabilitation center. Studying Sociology is particularly relevant as part of a study abroad experience as it offers a valuable means of actively accessing and engaging with the local community, as well as encourages students to think critically about their experiences. Because students conduct their fieldwork in Italian, the Sociology course is also a useful way of developing and utilizing Italian language skills, allowing students to learn the language through applying it academically.
