A busy Time in Siena for Restoration Projects Underway!

You might think that Siena is quiet in the off-season, but for the city workers responsible for maintaining the streets and landmarks of the historic center, it’s quite the opposite: this is an incredibly busy time of year!

Some statues are temporarily removed for restoration work, facades are getting cleaned, streets are being dug up to repair pipes, and cobblestones are being replaced all over town.

To me it’s fascinating to see these familiar sights in an unusual state of disarray, the infrastructure needed to maintain them, and to see the layers of the streets being taken apart and put back together.

The city is like an archaeological dig!
